A Chicago Senior Photographer’s Guide for Parents
Senior year sneaks up on parents, and the question I’ve been getting recently is:
“When is the best time for senior photos?”
The answer has less to do with the season and more to do with your child so I’ll try to explain some of the considerations that will help you decide what is best for you.
Yes, senior photos are about documenting this incredible milestone, but they’re also about confidence. One of my favorite parts of these sessions is watching seniors walk in nervous or unsure of themselves and leave feeling relaxed, confident, and genuinely seen. For parents, it becomes more than just taking pictures too. It’s an experience with your child during a season that goes unbelievably fast.
Every season offers something different around the Chicago area and northwest suburbs like Palatine, Barrington, Arlington Heights, and Long Grove. So here’s my honest take on the pros and cons of each one.
Summer Senior Photos (June–August)
Summer is probably the most popular time for senior photos. Schedules are usually more relaxed before school starts back up, everything is green and lush, and the sun stays out later, which makes weekday evening sessions much easier for working parents.
Summer is especially great for seniors involved in:
- Fall sports
- Marching band
- Theater
- Student leadership
- Heavy extracurricular schedules
A lot of families love getting senior photos done before the craziness of senior year really kicks in.

Why I Love Summer Sessions
- Gorgeous sunset light
- Green parks and nature
- Chicago lakefront sessions
- Flower fields and tall grass
- More flexibility with schedules
- Seniors tend to feel relaxed and carefree
Personally, I think June is kind of the sweet spot around here. We usually haven’t hit that heavy mid-summer heat yet, and everything still looks fresh and vibrant. Depending on the heat, grass and flowers can start fading later in July.
Things to Keep in Mind
July and August book FAST. Especially weekends and sunset sessions.
And yes… humidity is real. Professional hair and makeup makes a huge difference, not just because it photographs beautifully, but because when seniors feel good, they photograph differently. They relax. They trust the process more. Confidence really changes everything in photos.
Fall Senior Photos (September–November)
Fall usually comes to mind as the best season for senior photos as it’s many people’s favorite season.
The colors are beautiful, the temperatures are comfortable, and there’s just something timeless about fall portraits in the Midwest.
In the Chicago suburbs, peak color is usually around mid-October.
Why Families Love Fall Photos
- Beautiful autumn colors
- Cooler temperatures
- Cozy layered outfits
- Warm rich tones
Fall is perfect for seniors who love:
- Sweaters and boots
- Nature-focused photos
- That classic Midwest fall feel

My Honest Thoughts About Fall Timing
This is where I always tell parents to think beyond just “pretty leaves.”
October can become VERY stressful for seniors applying to colleges with November 1 early admission deadlines. Some kids love having senior photos as a break from all the pressure. Others feel overwhelmed adding one more thing to the calendar. It really depends on your child.
And once daylight savings time hits in November… whew. The sun starts setting ridiculously early, which sometimes means pulling your child out of school early for a full session.
That said, fall sessions do feel extra emotional sometimes. Senior year suddenly feels very real by then.
Winter Senior Photos (not to be overlooked)
Winter is definitely the least common season for senior photos, but honestly, it can be SO cool. Winter sessions tend to feel more editorial, artistic, and fashion-forward.
Snow, city lights, darker tones, coats, boots, dramatic textures… it creates a completely different vibe.
Winter Is Great For Seniors Who:
- Want something different
- Love fashion
- Prefer urban locations
- Want studio portraits
- Like moodier, artistic images
Studio sessions are also amazing in winter because you don’t have to worry about weather at all.
And honestly, some seniors who feel awkward outside or uncomfortable with attention really thrive in the studio environment. It feels more relaxed and private, and that can help confidence come out naturally.

Spring Senior Photos (April–May)
Spring sessions can be absolutely beautiful when everything starts blooming again. Flowering trees, soft colors, fresh greenery… spring photos tend to feel light, airy, and happy.
Why Some Seniors Love Spring
- Blooming flowers and trees
- Mild temperatures
- Softer color palettes
- A chance to do photos later in senior year
Spring is also a great option for seniors who:
- Missed summer or fall
- Changed a lot during senior year
- Want updated photos closer to graduation
By spring, a lot of seniors have grown into themselves more. They know where they’re headed next, and sometimes you can really see that confidence and maturity in the photos.

The Challenge With Spring in Chicago
Spring weather around Chicago can be unpredictable. Rain and reschedules are definitely more common, and honestly, our trees don’t fully leaf out until early May a lot of the time.
So if you need images early for graduation announcements or party invitations, that’s important to think about.
So… What’s the BEST Time for Senior Photos?
For most seniors, I’d say the sweet spot is probably:
Late June through early October
That window usually gives you:
- Beautiful weather
- Great lighting
- More location options
- Time before yearbook deadlines
- Less stress once school activities ramp up
But truly, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer.
The best senior photos are the ones that fit into your calendar and actually feel like your child – whether that’s golden summer light, colorful fall leaves, blooming spring flowers, or a modern studio session downtown.
And honestly, the experience matters just as much as the final images.
Years from now, you’ll love the photographs. But I think you’ll also remember the experience itself -spending intentional time together, seeing your child light up with confidence, and getting to pause for a minute during a season that moves unbelievably fast.
A Few Tips for Planning Senior Photos
Book Early
The best summer and fall dates tend to book well in advance. I only work two weekends per month, so if weekends matter to your family, don’t wait too long.
Think About Your Senior’s Personality
Some seniors love being busy and social in the fall. Others are already overwhelmed with sports, school, and college applications.
Timing should support your child and not add stress.
Plan for Variety
Some of my favorite senior sessions include:
- Casual outfits
- Dressier editorial looks
- Sports or activity outfits
- Meaningful hobbies or interests
That mix is what makes a gallery feel personal and unique to your senior.
Senior Photos Should Feel Like Them
One of the things parents tell me all the time after a session is, “That was so much easier and more fun than we expected.”
Most seniors walk in saying they feel awkward in photos or don’t know what to do in front of the camera, which is completely normal. I guide them the entire time so nothing feels forced or overly posed, and somehow by the end, they’re relaxed, laughing, and usually having way more fun than they expected.
I also really try to make the session feel true to who your child is. Not overly trendy. Not overly staged. Just a really good experience that captures their personality and this season of life in a genuine way.
And honestly, I think that’s why the photos end up meaning so much to parents years later.
